“Hey Kid” is one of many pet portraits created by Newcastle artist
\nAnn Ranlett, who says 90 percent of her work is “critter art.”<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Some artists depend on a muse to find inspiration. Others
\nfind it with something that meows, quacks or barks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two of the three May featured artists at the Auburn Old Town Gallery,
\n218 Washington St., have an artistic connection to animals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ann Ranlett said 90 percent of her product
\nis a\u0000\u001ccritter art.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n

a\u0000\u001cIta\u0000\u0019s been a life long love of animals,a\u0000\u001d said
\nthe Newcastle artist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ranlett started drawing and painting pet portraits around 10 years ago,
\nprojects commissioned by friends. Her commission list grew to a point that
\nshe was able to quit her job about five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

a\u0000\u001cI have a great time because Ia\u0000\u0019m meeting people who love their
\npets,a\u0000\u001d she said.
\nRanletta\u0000\u0019s process starts by photographing her subject, which she
\nsaid provides an opportunity to get to know the animal.<\/span><\/p>\n

a\u0000\u001cI get good photos, and photos make a big difference,a\u0000\u001d she
\nsaid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ranlett said she mostly paints dog portraits, a\u0000\u001clots
\nof chihuahuas, quite a few golden retrievers.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n

a\u0000\u001cCats are nice but not as special as some dogs,a\u0000\u001d she
\nsaid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not all projects are quite so domesticated, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

a\u0000\u001cI actually have a commission for a snail,a\u0000\u001d Ranlett said. a\u0000\u001cThat
\nis probably one of the stranger ones on my list.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ranlett also said goats are fun to work with. She also recently created
\na portrait of a potbelly pig, Homer, for a local animal rescue group.<\/span><\/p>\n

No matter the critter, Ranlett said she always looks forward to the end
\nresult.<\/span><\/p>\n

a\u0000\u001cIta\u0000\u0019s always butterflies in my stomach when I turn a portrait
\nover to the owner,a\u0000\u001d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Prantil also knows her subjects quite
\nwell. Shea\u0000\u0019s been raising
\nllamas and angora goats in Colfax for 14 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

a\u0000\u001cThe natural progression is to take that wonderful fiber and put
\nit into my art work,a\u0000\u001d said the fiber artist. a\u0000\u001cEach animal is
\na treasure in its own color values.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n

Prantil loves a\u0000\u001cto be able to spin the
\nfiber, take it right from the hoof and spin it and make it into a creation.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n

She also likes working with color, dimension and texture, creating tapestries
\nand felting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ita\u0000\u0019s not hard for Prantil to find inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n

a\u0000\u001cIta\u0000\u0019s all surrounded with my ranch, and the forest,a\u0000\u001d she
\nsaid. a\u0000\u001cI live in the forest, and it really has an influence on my
\nwork and my work and my colors.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n
