Others<br \/>\nfind it with something that meows, quacks or barks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Two of the three May featured artists at the Auburn Old Town Gallery,<br \/>\n218 Washington St., have an artistic connection to animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Ann Ranlett said 90 percent of her product<br \/>\nis a\u0000\u001ccritter art.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">a\u0000\u001cIta\u0000\u0019s been a life long love of animals,a\u0000\u001d said<br \/>\nthe Newcastle artist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Ranlett started drawing and painting pet portraits around 10 years ago,<br \/>\nprojects commissioned by friends. Her commission list grew to a point that<br \/>\nshe was able to quit her job about five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">a\u0000\u001cI have a great time because Ia\u0000\u0019m meeting people who love their<br \/>\npets,a\u0000\u001d she said.<br \/>\nRanletta\u0000\u0019s process starts by photographing her subject, which she<br \/>\nsaid provides an opportunity to get to know the animal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">a\u0000\u001cI get good photos, and photos make a big difference,a\u0000\u001d she<br \/>\nsaid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Ranlett said she mostly paints dog portraits, a\u0000\u001clots<br \/>\nof chihuahuas, quite a few golden retrievers.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">a\u0000\u001cCats are nice but not as special as some dogs,a\u0000\u001d she<br \/>\nsaid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Not all projects are quite so domesticated, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">a\u0000\u001cI actually have a commission for a snail,a\u0000\u001d Ranlett said. a\u0000\u001cThat<br \/>\nis probably one of the stranger ones on my list.a\u0000\u001d<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Ranlett also said goats are fun to work with. She also recently created<br \/>\na portrait of a potbelly pig, Homer, for a local animal rescue group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">No matter the critter, Ranlett said she always looks forward to the end<br \/>\nresult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">a\u0000\u001cIta\u0000\u0019s always butterflies in my stomach when I turn a portrait<br \/>\nover to the owner,a\u0000\u001d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Mary Prantil also knows her subjects quite<br \/>\nwell.
