- Jack 6
Ready for color! This version is softer than the previous, where I had added back black. I softened & blended that black with scratching. - Jack 5
Darkest areas added with a tech pen. The texture of those areas still looks a little "chunky", but I'll blend that out with some scratching. - Jack 4
All scratched, and I started inking with a tech pen to bring back the darkest areas. You can see that on the left side; I have to finish inking that large dark patch of chest on the left side and add ink to the right side. Then I can add watercolor & scratch to fine tune. His eyes need more work also. - Jack 3
Some of the green from the eyes is scratched away so I could start layering color. A good portion of his fur is scratched at this stage too. Even though he's a black cat, I want texture and value changes in his fur, so much of it appears too light at this stage. That will get knocked back with washes of blue-grey watercolor in various shades once I've finished all the scratching. - Jack 1
Early stage of a 7" x 5" scratchboard portrait of Jack, the handsome Tuxedo cat. - Jack 2
First pass of color on his eyes, plenty of scratching left to do on the rest of him. - K9 Yukon - #5
Not quite done, but really, really close. Needs watercolor over some of the scratched areas, then select scratching to finish the portrait. Compare this one to the previous image where the portrait was much rougher. The scratching has helped to blend & soften the fur and tones. This stage is lighter, but the last pass with watercolor will bring back some contrast and color. - K9 Yukon - Final
The finished portrait 10" x 8" scratchboard with watercolor - K9 Yukon - #4
This is the first pass with color (watercolor), he stlll needs a bit of work (scratching and coloring in select areas) to fine tune everything. - K9 Yukon - #3
All scratched - ready for color - K9 Yukon - #1
Almost done with the scratching to the point where I can add color. The left side of his face needs to be scratched, then I'll ink to bring back dark areas, then add color. I'll also layer more fur over his "Sheriff" collar, but have to wait to do that until I have the color down first, so the fur can overlap that. - K9 Yukon - #1
Just getting started ... Plenty left to do at this point, but good progress. - "Pugshot"
